About me

Hi, my name is Faizaan! I read Mathematics at Oxford (BA and MMath), where I won the Sir Michael Atiyah Prize for best essay; and I studied Philosophy and Theology based in Cambridge (BA). I have been teaching mathematics, English, and philosophy for the last five years, in the form of private tutoring, teaching courses, and lecturing. I have taught from GCSE to university level. I have designed my own courses and resources which I have had great success in implementing.

I am a philosopher, mathematician, and writer. I am deeply interested in education and teaching; my work specialises in the study of first-principles and systems-thinking, upon which I have designed a system of knowledge and learning.

First-Principles: to truly understand the main ideas and principles which underpin the subject, rather than blindly memorising pieces of information.

Systems-Thinking: to always look to the ‘big-picture’, treating bits of information not as isolated units, but as parts of a bigger whole. A top-down approach, beginning with the broad overview of the subject before moving to particulars.

Above all things else, it is a vision that motivates me: a vision which sees education as so much more than a system to be passed, but a journey of self-realisation to be travelled. Knowledge is not just about being book-smart, but, the real purpose of education, and true knowledge, as Plato said, is to ‘Know Thyself’:—that is, it is to develop your innate abilities, and realise your potential: whether it be academic, physical, social, artistic, and so on. It is that vision of education which goes far beyond grades on a piece of paper, and remains with you far beyond school, equipping you not only for exams, but for life: whether that be at school, at home, or in the workplace.
