About me

My name is Valerie, and I am a Masters of Science student in Comparative Social Policy. I also have a Masters of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of Cambridge and an undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Chicago. I am from the United States, and I am a 2018 Marshall Scholar and a 2020 Dahrendorf Scholar.

During my masters degrees, I have tutored extensively online. I have experience teaching English and Sociology to students of many different ages. I also have experience with exam preparation (including lessons related to reading, writing, listening, and verbal reasoning) for UKiset, 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance Exams, IGCSEs, and TOEFL. I also have two years of experience working with dozens of students as they prepared university application materials for schools in the United States and the United Kingdom. I worked one-on-one with these students and also worked as an essay editor for many others.

I value the unique ways that teaching allows me to connect with and support students all over the world. Helping students understand complex concepts is an incredibly rewarding experience. I believe in positive reinforcement and being cheerful and supportive throughout each lesson.
