BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Physics

About me

My name’s Dan, I’m from Devon in England, and I'm currently pursuing a degree in maths and physics at St Andrews University. With over two years of tutoring experience, I have delivered more than 100 sessions.

In my approach to tutoring, I strongly emphasise the value of comprehension over rote memorisation. Regardless of who I'm tutoring, my number one goal is to foster a deep understanding of the subject by tapping into the underlying intuition. I do this by incorporating analogies, diagrams, visuals, and engaging in discussions. Any tutoring session with me will not be passive; instead, it will be an extensive back-and-forth conversation as we dig into the topic at hand. I am a big advocate of the Feynman method of learning, which suggests that mastering a topic comes from being able to explain it in your own words to someone else. In my experience, fully grasping a concept once is far more effective than mindlessly following a set of prescribed steps a teacher has given you, without explanation.

By using these learning methods, I was able to achieve a 45/45 grade in the International Baccalaureate, with 7s in higher level maths and physics. Furthermore, I obtained 10 grade 9s at the GCSE level. Currently, I continue to apply these same principles in my university studies, where I am on track for a first-class degree.

Having witnessed the effectiveness of these methods firsthand, I firmly believe they can work for anyone. Therefore, I would be delighted to tutor any students, no matter the age or ability.

Thank you for considering me as your tutor. I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals.
