International Relations and Chinese

About me

Hello! I'm Isla, a current final year student from Durham University studying Chinese and International Relations. I have just returned from my year abroad in Taiwan, where I honed my linguistic skills through an immersive experience at the National Taiwan Normal University’s Mandarin Training Centre, achieving a B2 level of Mandarin proficiency. This level enables me to engage in clear, fluent interactions and discussions, making me well-equipped to assist you in your language journey.

My diverse background, encompassing British, American, and international living experiences, has provided me with a unique perspective on global communication. Having studied and resided in Hong Kong, the USA, and the UK, where I completed my International Baccalaureate Diploma at a boarding school, I have a deep understanding of various cultures and their impact on effective interaction.

I've been a user of tutoring platforms throughout my educational journey, which has instilled in me the value of hard work and personalised guidance. Recognising that each student has their unique pace and learning style, I am committed to tailoring my lessons to your specific needs. My passion lies in helping others succeed, and I'm experienced in tutoring Mandarin to elementary-aged students (6-12) in both private and small group settings. In these roles, I designed custom lesson plans, delivered engaging and well-structured lessons, and ensured my students were well-prepared for the academic challenges ahead.

I also tutor soft skills in a gentle and engaging manner. Drawing from my experience as a mentor within my university and as a camp counsellor, I use creative and interactive methods to encourage tutees to explore their inner world of thoughts, ideas, and emotions. This process not only facilitates their emotional growth and development but also fosters greater self-confidence and independence.
